The Tool Box of Community and Connectivity – Greetings all

AUGUST 2020 HIGHWAYS AND BYWAYS & MISSIONARY SISTERS OF SERVICE NEWSLETTER

2020 SMALL GRANTS ANNOUNCED

AN INVITATION FOOD FOR THE HIGHWAYS AND BYWAYS FUNDRAISING DINNERS

Firstly thank you for your wonderful support over the months since our last newsletter went out across the country. At a time like this, those donations are extra appreciated!

The images featured  here are of some of the Longford Berry Farm workers from Timor and Tonga.  – experiencing snow for the first time and being supported by the local community in their homes, for meals and family times together. Read more here of the Highways and Byways 2019 grant  to support the seasonal workers.

I’ve recently read an article in the Rolling Stone by Wade Davis who holds the Leadership Chair in Cultures and Ecosystems at Risk at the University of British Columbia and would like to give you his opening quote here.

Never in our lives have we experienced such a global phenomenon. For the first time in the history of the world, all of humanity, informed by the unprecedented reach of digital technology, has come together, focused on the same existential threat, consumed by the same fears and uncertainties, eagerly anticipating the same, as yet unrealized, promises of medical science.

In a single season, civilization has been brought low by a microscopic parasite 10,000 times smaller than a grain of salt. Covid 19 attacks our physical bodies, but also the cultural foundations of our lives, the toolbox of community and connectivity that is for the human what claws and teeth represent to the tiger.”  Full article here

We hear and read endlessly of the sadness of lives and livelihoods lost and crumbling systems during this pandemic. This newsletter is a simple reminder that the toolbox of community and connectivity is alive and thriving at the grass roots of small communities.

Along with the newsletter is a list of the 2020 Grant recipients – we are delighted that 17 projects are up and running in this year of challenges. They also give great examples of community connection.

We have also included an invitation to join us in holding a Food for the Highways and Byways fundraising Dinner with your family or friends if permitting. All the details below and above on the link.

The Missionary Sisters of Service newsletter features a beautiful article on one of the MSS sisters Maureen Hickling.

We hope you stay safe and well – and especially connected!
